An article posted on TSN this morning is beginning to stir up a lot of discussion about the NHL in Toronto. The article suggests that National Hockey League officials think the Toronto hockey market is big and strong enough to have a second team. An anonymous governor of the NHL said “Why shouldn’t we put another team in the biggest and best market in the world?” Other executives around the NHL seemed to have no idea about this. Jim Rutherford of the Carolina Hurricanes said he had not heard anything like this at the meetings he had been at.
A report given by the Globe and Mail stated that the NHL has publicly announced the possibility of expanding to teams overseas. Seemingly overnight, this speculation has spawned garrulous debate about possible expansion; from newspaper articles to blog pages across the continent. Although they do not expect that this expansion has an adequate timeline, the NHL expects the possibility of it materializing within the next 10 years.
TSN is reporting that players have rejected the suggestion of moving free agent day from July 1, to July 7, to not interfere with Canada day, or Independence day.

Count Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland as one of those who believe that the NHL will see a rise in offer sheets being tendered to restricted free agents, according to The Vancouver Sun.
Bob McKenzie is reporting on TSN.ca that the National Hockey League is considering a proposal that would see a “significant overhaul” to the league.
Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch reported over the week-end that the chances of Winnipeg getting an NHL franchise back are slim to none.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been lobbying the National Hockey League to expunge captain Mats Sundin’s last year of his contract, according to Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun.
Although projections have revenue increasing this year, the National Hockey League still plans to “impose the 10 percent escrow deductions from players’ paychecks” for the remainder of the season, as agreed to in the new CBA, reports the New York Post’s Larry Brooks
Pierre LeBrun reports in the Toronto Sun that early projections have NHL revenues on the rise once again this season.
After 40 years of wearing the same basic uniforms, the National Hockey League will introduce new “streamlined uniform[s] that blend fashion with functionality.”
Ross McKeon of the San Francisco Chronicle quotes a top Los Angeles Kings executive as saying that Kansas City will get an NHL franchise sooner, rather than later.
In an article by Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun, “Harley Hotchkiss, an executive with the Calgary Flames and chairman of the league’s board of governors,” says the National Hockey League is open minded to expanding to Canadian markets. Not now, however, but somewhere down the road.
