But, if this is the case, should the Habs be able to sign him, it would solve some of their problems for at least two years.

Sundin still has one good year, and one half decent year. Sundin’s good year would be one with the Habs centennial.

It wouldn’t matter on what line he could play, I’m sure the coaching staff, as well as the players would be more than happy to accommodate him.

And what would be said of Bob Gainey, who some questioned if he had the intestinal fortitude to be a gm in Montreal, they would be put to shame.

As I said, as of now I can’t confirm this, but hopefully….

Amidst the reports that the Ottawa Senators are also in the final running for Hossa, this news comes with great joy to some Habs fans. If Waddell was seen in Hamilton, why would the certainly busy Atlanta gm been wasting his time there if the Habs were not in the running for Hossa. Waddell has been to two Canadiens games lately, and now their farm team game.

To the general public who have no contact with teams, the Atlanta gm in essence has been around the Habs on three separate occasions, why?

Will there be some action between the Canadiens and Thrashers? Will Hossa finally go where he has been rumoured to go for over a month now, or, is Wadell simply toying with the Canadiens management and it’s fans?

With reports that Marian Hossa is going anywhere from Montreal, to outer space, where will the talented sniper end up? Marian has said in the past that he would like to go to a team that has play-off aspirations.

One thing is certain, Marian Hossa is moving. But where? Your guess is as good as mine.

According to this person, who shall remain anonymous, they claim that the other club involved is the Florida Panthers.

The supposed deal breaks down like this:

To New Jersey: Olli Jokinen, Ruslan Salei, and Ville Peltonen.

To Florida: Brian Gionta, Andy Greene, Sergei Brylin, Matt Halischuk or Nicklas Bergfors, Draft pick in 08 or 09.

While we’ve never reported made up rumors, fabrications, or in any way pretended to have inside sources, we figured that we’d share this tidbit with y’all just for the hell of it…

Even if this ‘rumor’ is bogus, it would be interesting to discuss the merits of such a deal if it were to go down.

Would it be a fair trade?

Which team would it benefit the most? This year? Down the road?

Thanks to Alex for sending this about the Maple Leafs. Apparently, while John Ferguson Jr. was still the GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he received a number of calls from other GMs regarding the availability of some of his players.

During the 2nd intermission of Wednesday’s game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres, former Leafs GM John Ferguson Jr. told TSN’s James Duthie that he received a lot of calls from his colleagues inquiring about Mats Sundin and Tomas Kaberle. JFJ also said that a few teams expressed interest in Darcy Tucker, and to a lesser extent Bryan McCabe.

Meanwhile, word is that Minnesota Wild are pursuing pending unrestricted free agent forward Peter Forsberg.

John Shipley of the St. Paul Pioneer Press is reporting in this morning’s paper (2/14) that the Wild still believe they are in the running for Peter Forsberg should he make a return to the NHL. Unlike Anaheim and Detroit, both of which received calls from Forsberg’s agent saying they are off the list, the Wild have received no such call. They need a veteran center in a bad way. The biggest question is whether Doug Risebrough will open that large “Wild” checkbook and start spending.

That’s not to say the two clubs are close to completing a trade, though. Waddell admits that he’s not sure he and Burke will come together on a deal.

“I don’t know what they’re going to do.”

However, the Thrashers’ GM says that he has been involved in trade talks with a number of his other colleagues from around the league.

“In the last week I’ve probably talked to 15 GMs, there’s been more talk going on than there was before. Whether that means anything, I don’t know. We’ll see.”

But as Custance points out, the Thrashers do not have a whole lot of depth at any particular position to complete significant trades. Of course, finding a trading partner is also hampered by the salary cap and the number of teams still chasing a playoff spot.

Apparently, TSN’s Bob Mckenzie is reporting that the Montreal Canadiens are looking to ship their captain to the San Jose Sharks for forward Patrick Marleau.

Bob Mckenzie of TSN in Toronto reported on air a trade rumor that would send Saku Koivu and Michael Ryder from MTL to SJ in return for Patrick Marleau and another player to be determined, Steve Bernier or [Joe] Pavelski. Former Habs defenseman Craig Rivet would appreciate to have his friend Koivu join him in SJ.

Hmmm. I wonder about this one. Are the Canadiens really that anxious to shake-up their struggling roster that they’re considering moving Koivu? Talk about a desperation move. Even if they can get Bernier or Pavelski, I for one don’t think the Canadiens are at a point where they are exploring dealing Koivu.

Now, trading Ryder is a different story.

The guy has been a bust this season, and is an unrestricted free agent come July 1st. Dumping his salary to free up some cap room would be a great deal for the Canadiens, let alone getting a draft pick or player in return.

As for Marleau, rumors are that the Toronto Maple Leafs have called to inquire about his availability and that the Sharks are listening to offers. So, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the Canadiens may be getting in on trying to acquire Marleau.

UPDATE: TSN’s Bob McKenzie is denying reports that he said the Montreal Canadiens and San Jose sharks are talking trade.
