Islanders Draft Watch: Drew Doughty
Steve Stamkos is the consensus #1 pick. After that, it’s anyone’s guess where the rest of the players wind up being drafted.
Each week, from now until the Draft, I will be profiling a new prospect from the Draft Pool and analyzing how their skills might or might not make them a good fit for the New York Islanders.
Drew Doughty – D – 6′0, 185 lbs. – Shoots Right
At one time during the year, Drew Doughty was actually ranked ahead of Stamkos on many analyst’s draft boards. He is considered to be the best defenseman available in a draft that features several highly rated defensive prospects. Doughty is an offensive minded d-man with a penchant for making beautiful end to end rushes. He makes a strong first pass out of his zone. He does have a tendency to get caught out of position at times.
How he’d help: The Islanders were among the worst teams last season as far as the Power Play goes. Doughty put up close a point per game in the OHL this year and his offensive capabilities would address the need for a legitimate PP quarterback. It is likely, though, that he will be long gone by the time New York picks at #5.

Frank, do you think the Isles would consider trading up to get Doughty?

Hey Alin,
No, the Isles don’t have anything besides Okposo that anyone wants.
Besides, the only player they’d trade up for is Stamkos.
Just not going to happen.
