Ryan Smyth to become a Ranger?

Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News reports that the New York Rangers have already show interest in Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Smyth.

During a recent segment of SportsNet’s Sources Say, the panel said that the Rangers desperately covet Smyth to improve their depth on the wings and as a presence on the power play, someone that could crash the crease and go hard to the net.

The Sources Say panel say that Smyth would also be a good fit on the Chicago Blackhawks. Smyth could provide some much needed veteran leadership that could help the club out of their current slump.

The problem is that Smyth has a no-movement clause in his contract, and appears reluctant to waive it.

If the chance to win the Stanley Cup isn’t enough incentive for Smyth to allow a trade, the Oilers could guarantee to re-sign him in the summer if he would let the club deal him for some much needed assets.

The Oilers are said to be looking for a young defenseman in return for the 35-year-old, according to Gleason.
