Are the Rangers looking to dump Kasparaitis?
Larry Brooks reports in the New York Post that defensemen Darius Kasparaitis may find himself out of town sooner, rather than later.
Due to his poor play this season, Kasparaitis has become a drain on new York Rangers’ cap space. Keeping the Russian blueliner around costs the Rangers about “$16,285 of space cap a day and $114,000 of cap space a week.”
Brooks speculates that Kasparaitis could be waived and sent to the minors (again), or traded altogether. Each options comes with it’s own risk and problems, though.
If the Rangers choose to waive him, and then try to re-call him, Kasparaitis “would be subject to re-entry waivers.” This means that if another club were to claim him, the “Rangers and the acquiring club would each be responsible for half the cap charge for the remainder of the contract,” which has one more season to go after this one.
If the Rangers choose to explore trading Kasparaitis, they will find teams looking “to move an equally onerous contract” as the Rangers are trying to unload. So, trading Kasper is easier said than done.
