Blues will be deadline dealers
In the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Jeremy Rutherford reports that the St. Louis Blues plan to wait for closer to the trade deadline to make any major trades.
Team President John Davidson believes that because of salary cap restraints, more deals will be available near the February 27 trade deadline.
“You just can’t make a deal until later in the season when the player’s salary has been partially paid, so the number isn’t nearly as high,” Davidson said. “In having plenty of discussions with plenty of people around the league, we sense that there will be more happening around the deadline than there is now.”
But the 7-17-4 Blues are in dire need of some scoring help right now, and could use their “depth on defense to acquire offense.”
So, waiting for February to make trades would lead one to infer that the Blues will be sellers, rather than buyers, at the deadline.
Watch for players like Bill Guerin, Doug Weight, and Keith Tkachuk to attract attention from playoff teams who may be looking for depth at forward. Teams looking to bolster their blueline might have some interest in defenseman Eric Brewer.
