Bruins not willing to trade future for quick fixes
Boston Bruins vice president Cam Neely tells Boston Herald’s Stephen Harris reports that the club will not deplete their roster of young talent for a playoff push.
“You want to do well, obviously, but you also have to stay on course short-term and mid-term,” said Neely. “One of the things that maybe has happened in the past is changing directions too much.”
Word around the league is that the Bruins would consider moving the likes of Matt Lashoff, Mark Stuart and Phil Kessel for an established goal-scorer.
However, Neely is says that under the watch of Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli the club will not trade for quick-fixes and short-term gains.
“Our main objective is to try to improve our club and not jeopardize what we’re trying to do. I mean, if the right opportunity (comes along), I know Peter will make the move. But we’ve seen it too often where you give up too much of your youth, your future, for short-term improvement.”
Rather than mortgaging their future as was done in the past by previous GMs, the Bruins have now adopted a philosophy of building from within.
“We want to continue to go down the path we’re going. We’re making strides in the right direction. We’re very committed and excited by what we see, not just for this year (but) for the next few years.”
