Can Carle’s deal send Redden packing out of Ottawa?

Allen Panzeri of The Ottawa Citizen speculates that the four-year, $13.72 million contract extension signed by San Jose Sharks defenseman Matt Carle could have a major impact on the Ottawa Senators.

For one thing, Carle’s deal will undoubtedly be brought up in contract negotiations between the club and pending restricted free agent blueliner Andrej Meszaros. If Meszaros doesn’t end up getting the $3.43 million average salary that Carle gets, he could get close to it.

That in turn could have an effect on what Senators GM Bryan Murray will do with defenseman Wade Redden, an unrestricted free agent come July 1st.

Even if Redden were to take a pay cut on his current $6.5 million salary, the Senators would have a difficult time fitting him under their self-imposed budget and even the NHL’s salary cap.

Why?

The Senators still have to hand out contracts to soon-to-be free agent forwards Antoine Vermette, Patrick Eaves and Chris Kelly, this after already signing forwards Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza to huge long-term deals.
