Devils pursuing Markov?
Mark Everson of the New York Post reports that the New Jersey Devils are considering signing unrestricted free agent defenseman Danny Markov to bolster their thin blueline.
The Devils are said to have inquired about Markov during the summer but decided to take a pass and sign Karel Rachunek and Vitaly Vishnevski.
But with Colin White and Johnny Oduya injured, the Devils’ limited options for the back-end consists of regulars Paul Martin and Richard Matvichuk, off-season acquisitions Rachunek and Vishnevski, and rookies Mike Mottau and Matt Corrente.
As Everson points out, the Devils could really use a “mobile all-around backliner” of Markov’s quality.
However, the Devils have a problem. The club is currently $1.6 million from the salary cap ceiling, and would have to clear some space to fit in Markov’s salary demands. It’s believed that Markov is seeking upwards of $2.5 million per season.
One solution would be to place Jamie Langenbrunner’s $2.8 million salary, White’s $3 million and Cam Janssen’s $600,000 on the Long-Term Injury list. All three are expected to miss considerable time due to various injuries.
