Flyers looking to ink soon-to-be free agents

After signing defenseman Braydon Coburn to a long-term deal, Ed Moran of the Philadelphia Daily News reports that Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren is working on signing the club’s pending free agents to contract extensions.

That list that includes restricted free agent forwards Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Randy Jones, and R.J. Umberger and unrestricted free agent defenseman Jason Smith.

For now, Holmgren admits that talks with Richards and Smith are in the “preliminary stage” while “he will look to start negotiations with the others in the new year.”

Holmgren also said he would like to get all five players under contract before the season ends.

In the case of Richards, Carter, Jones, and Umberger the Flyers don’t want to have to deal with other teams offering them bloated offer sheets when they hit free agency in July.

“That is certainly one of the reasons,” Holmgren said.

When it comes to Smith, the Flyers would like to retain their captain and not lose him as an UFA.
