Forsberg, Markov not in Penguins’ budget
While Internet rumors suggest that the Pittsburgh Penguins are interested in forward Peter Forsberg and defenseman Danny Markov, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Dave Molinari reports that neither are expected to sign with the club.
According to Molinari, Penguins GM Ray Shero has made it clear on several occasions that the club is working under a self-imposed budget, one that they have already reached.
So, even though the Penguins are far from the salary cap ceiling and even if they may want to sign one or both unrestricted free agents, “there simply isn’t any room for [Forsberg and/or Markov] in the Penguins’ salary structure.”
In Forsberg’s case, there are also concerns over his health and the number of injuries he has sustained the last couple of years.
As for Markov, the Penguins could really use a rugged blueliner like him, but they “don’t have the resources to compete with other offers he will get.”
Bottom line, “the Penguins weren’t in the market for any more prominent free agents.”
