Hossa, Havlat to reunite in Montreal?
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports that if the Montreal Canadiens acquire pending unrestricted free agent forward Marian Hossa from the Atlanta Thrashers, they may also try to swing a deal for forward Martin Havlat of the Chicago Blackhawks as well.
Hossa and Havlat, who were teammates with the Ottawa Senators, are both said to be on the outs with their respective teams, but for different reasons.
Hossa is a soon-to-be UFA and doesn’t appear to be all that interested in re-signing with the Thrashers, calling the chances of it happening “slim.” Thus, Thrashers GM Don Waddell may look to deal Hossa so as to not lose him for nothing in the summer.
Meanwhile, the Blackhawks are willing to move Havlat due to his inconsistent play, injury problems, and his $6 million salary cap hit.
However, the Canadiens will have competition for both Hossa and Havlat.
Even though they are the most aggressive team in picking up Hossa, the Canadiens will have to battle it out with the Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, Ottawa Senators and San Jose Sharks, according to Garrioch.
Which ever team wins the Hossa sweepstakes, they will have to meet the Thrashers’ asking price of “a player who can help immediately, a prospect and a draft pick.”
As for Havlat, he is said to be pursued by the Devils among other teams.
