Improved play may see Gerber moved
Ottawa Senators goalie Martin Gerber tells Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun that he will do his best to regain his position as the team’s number one goaltender, something that could actually see him shipped out of town.
“You’re hired here and you want to play here,” said Gerber. “It’s out of my hands to decide what’s going to happen, but I want to work as hard as I can and go from there.”
Gerber made it clear to Senators GM Bryan Murray during the off-season that he’d like to get more ice time or be traded. Murray shopped the Swiss goaltender around the league, but there were no takers.
However, Gerber now says that leaving Ottawa is no longer on his mind.
“I really just want to get some ice time and I just want to get myself in as good a position as possible that they have to put me in net,” said Gerber.
“I just want them to play me. I’m just trying to help the team get better. Everything else, I really don’t have control over. Whatever happens, happens and they’re going to do what’s best for the team. What’s that going to be? Nobody knows.”
Still, if Gerber can regain his form from his days with the Carolina Hurricanes, it’s possible some team in need of a capable goaltender might put in a call to the Senators. For their part, the Senators may jump at the chance to dump Gerber and his $3.7 million salary cap hit.
