Is Liles trade bait?

Adrian Dater of the Denver Post continues to believe that Colorado Avalanche defenseman John-Michael Liles could be moved before the February 26 trade deadline.

Aside from the fact that Liles becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1st, Dater believes that the puck-moving blueliner would make a likely choice to be traded because he can be replaced with Kyle Cumiskey, who is less expensive and plays a pretty similar game.

Perhaps the biggest reason to move Liles is that he would garner the best return in a trade out of anyone that is up for grabs on Colorado’s roster.

So, what might the Avalanche want for Liles?

Dater suggests that “a big, tough defenseman or a goalie is what is needed” should be at the top of their list. For the Avalanche to acquire a significant player, though, they may have to package Liles with “another player or two.”

Speculation was last week that the Avalanche may make a play for then-struggling Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. But with his recent return to form, that may be an unlikely scenario now.
