Lemaire urges Wild management to acquire a number one center
Minnesota Wild head coach Jacques Lemaire tells John Shipley of the St. Paul Pioneer Press that he would love it if management brought it a top-line center before the regular season gets under way.
“I would love to get a center,” Lemaire said after the Wild’s 6-1 loss to Detroit in their exhibition opener at the Xcel Energy Center. “That’s what I’m looking for first – get a center and put (Pavol Demitra) on the wing.”
When acquire during the off-season, it was thought that forward Eric Belanger would take over as the team’s first-line center, playing between Demitra and Marian Gaborik. However, Lemaire doesn’t see a fit.
“Maybe I’m wrong here,” Lemaire said Tuesday night, “but what I’ve seen so far of Eric with them, I don’t know if he’s going to fit [on the top-line].”
For now, it appears that Lemaire may have to fill that center spot from within the organization, either by promoting a youngster or moving Demitra to the middle.
Should those plans not pan out for the Wild, it’s possible they could try to acquire a center via the free agent market or through trade.
