Modano to retire a Star?
Dallas Stars forward Mike Modano tells Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun that he plans on playing the rest of his NHL career with the club.
“I love it here. I love Dallas, (co-GM) Les (Jackson) is the guy who drafted me in Minnesota and I’ve known him for a long time. (Owner) Tom (Hicks) has been good to us and treated me well. I don’t really see any cause or reason for me to go elsewhere.”
As the owner of a no-movement clause in his contract, Modano controls his destiny. But it doesn’t appear that he’s given much thought to leaving the Stars for a bonafide Stanley Cup contender. In fact, as his career is winding down, the 37-year-old American forward hopes to lead his current club to the promised land again.
“Knowing what it takes to win and being around here for so long, you know what type of chemistry you need and what variety of players you need,” said Modano. “You’d like to finish your career on a high note. Have some fun. Have some good numbers and just enjoy it.”
For their part, Star management have no intentions of moving Modano, even though he would be “a hot commodity” on the trade market. Rather, co-GMs Brett Hull and Jackson have made “it clear they’d like to surround Modano with more talent.”
Modano is signed through the 2009-10 season.
