Niedermayer on verge of comeback?
TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that Anaheim Ducks defenseman Scott Niedermayer could put an end to his self-imposed hiatus and return to action in the very near future.
According to sources close to Niedermayer, the veteran blueliner could re-join the Ducks as early as this week. It’s unclear at this time if he will play past this season and finish up his contract with the Ducks that runs out at the end of next year.
Regardless, it would be a welcomed addition for the struggling Ducks, even though his return would place the Ducks in the position of making some moves to accommodate Niedermayer’s $6.5 million annual salary.
As McKenzie explains, the problem for the Ducks is not fitting Niedermayer under the salary cap, but their committed payroll for next season.
With Niedermayer potentially returning, and with another year left on his contract after this season, the Ducks could not add him to the roster now without freeing up cap room for next season. In the new CBA, it’s called ‘tagging’ room and the Ducks don’t have enough of it next season to allow Niedermayer back on the roster this season – unless they move a player who is under contract for next season.
Numerous sources indicate that the Ducks have been “active in trade talks this week,” and that they are prepared to trade Mathieu Schneider, Francois Beauchemin and Sean O’Donnell. Basically any defenseman off their roster not named Chris Pronger.
