Niedermayer return could cause Ducks cap problems, force club to deal
Should defenseman Scott Niedermayer return to action this season, Eric Duhatschek of The Globe and Mail reports that the Anaheim Ducks will have to shed some payroll to fit him under the salary cap.
The Ducks don’t have any cap problems this season, it’s next season that’s the trouble. With Niedermayer on their roster, the Ducks would exceed this year’s salary cap ceiling, since the blueliner is under contract for next season. That’s prohibited in the new CBA.
With that in mind, speculation has already begun to swirl about which player or players may get moved.
Preferably the Ducks would like to move forward Todd Marchant and his $2.517 million salary. However, the easiest move would be to trade defenseman Francois Beauchemin, who only earns $1.65 million since Marchant is a fourth-line checker, while Beauchemin could be a top-pairing blueliner on many teams.
Still, Duhatschek suggests that the Ducks could offer up their 2009 first-round pick along with Marchant to entice a team with salary-cap space to spare into making a deal.
Of course, the Ducks will also explore moving defenseman Mathieu Schneider and his $5.625 million salary.
