Penguins give Esche a test run

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette is reporting that unrestricted free agent goaltender Robert Esche worked out with the Pittsburgh Penguins last week.

Esche auditioned in front of Penguins management by taking to the ice against Penguins forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, among others.

The former Philadelphia Flyer says he has been working out all summer to get into shape and he’s ready to sign on with an NHL team.

“I lost a lot of weight this summer,” Esche said. “I feel good and quick, something that I never really had in the NHL. I’ve never been in that good of shape.”

It’s believed that Esche got the tryout with the Penguins through his good friend Mark Recchi, a veteran with the club.

According to Post Gazette writer Dave Molinari, however, it’s not expected Esche will land in Pittsburgh since the Penguins already have Marc-Andre Fleury and Dany Sabourin signed to one-way contracts. The team also has Ty Conklin in the minors.
