Penguins, Malone decide to halt contract talks
Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero tells Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review that he and pending unrestricted free agent forward Ryan Malone have agreed to postpone contract negotiations until the season is over.
“We’ll get to it at the end of the season,” Shero said Tuesday. “I’ve had some general discussions with his agent (Mike Liut) over the last month, but we’ve kind of set it aside a bit.”
And that may very well work Malone’s favor if he performs well in the playoffs. Shero says that he is well aware Malone’s asking price may rise with a strong post-season performance.
“For every goal he scores, assist or fight he has – look, we’re rooting for him. I hope he has a great playoff,” Shero said. “It’s the way the system is, and Ryan knows what our feelings are.”
Word is that the Penguins’ last offer, which came recently, was for a bit more than his current salary of $1.45 million on a long-term deal. Obviously, Malone wasn’t in a hurry to sign it.
Still, the 28-year-old Malone appears to be very much interested in re-signing with the Penguins, and hopes to do so before July 1st.

Malone is not a superstar, but if he does well in the play-offs, he might think he’s one. He is a good player, not great yet.
