Return still a possibility, says Niedermayer
While spending some time with the Stanley Cup in his hometown of Cranbrook, B.C, Anaheim Ducks defenseman Scott Niedermayer told TSN that he is not completely set on retiring from the NHL.
While Niedermayer admits that he was drained by the 82-game regular season schedule and the drive to the Cup, spending a couple of months away from the ice has helped him get a new perspective on things.
“Obviously, it’s a lot different after the Stanley Cup playoffs,” Niedermayer told TSN. “You’re tired, you’ve been through a long year. And after having some time off, you’re feeling better physically.”
“I’m in a different spot, no question about it,” he told TSN. “But again, I’m just trying to make the right decision. I know it’s unfortunate that people are waiting to see what the decision is – it’s not fun, but that’s the way it is right now.”
One person waiting to hear Niedermayer’s decision is Ducks GM Brian Burke. Burke, says Niedermayer, has been very patient and understanding with him throughout this whole process.
“I wanted to him (Burke) to try and know where I was at, especially at that time,” said Niedermayer. “As a teammate, you want to support and help your teammates as much as possible. Whether you’re on the ice or whether you’re not, you want to at least help your teammates and do the right thing. That’s what I thought, and Brian said ‘we can make it work any way you want it to work.’ It’s a big decision and hopefully I can come up with the right one at the right time.”
