Svitov out? Who’s in?
Reports indicate that Columbus Blue Jackets forward Alexander Svitov has signed with a Russian team, reports Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch.
Svitov, who was to earn $1 million this season and $1.25 million in 2008-09 after signing a two-year deal with the Blue Jackets this June, has supposedly signed a three-year contract with Avangard Omsk of the Russian Super League.
“We’re surprised,” Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson said. “And disappointed.”
When Howson tried to get clarification on the situation, he tried to contact Svitov’s agent, Jay Grossman. Grossman was not available.
“We’ve placed a call to him, but we can’t get through,” Howson said. “We’re not sure what’s behind this decision.”
Should Svitov leave for Russia, it will force the Blue Jackets to replace him with another center. The club will likely shop through what’s left in the free-agent market.
Portzline suggests that Michael Peca would be of interest to the Blue Jackets.
