Thrashers, Hossa still working towards new deal
Atlanta Thrashers pending unrestricted free agent forward Marian Hossa tells Craig Custance of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he is still in negotiating a contract extension with the club.
Hossa says he has spoken with Thrashers GM Don Waddell, and expects to continue negotiating during the season. The Slovakian forward is not “in a rush to get anything done,” though.
If the Thrashers had their way, Custance believes they would “jump at a 4-year deal in the $30 million range.” That deal would come out to about the same average salary Dany Heatley received from the Ottawa Senators recently. It’s unknown what kind of numbers the Hossa camp is looking for.
“[Heatley] knows what’s right for him, so he did it,” Hossa said. “Good for him.”
For now, Hossa admits that his main focus right now is his performance on the ice and not his contract situation.
“Right now, my focus is on the beginning of the year,” he said.
