Thrashers set sights on re-signing Hossa
Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell confirms to Craig Custance of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the club have begun contract negotiations with pending unrestricted free agent forward Marian Hossa in the hopes of re-signing him before the start of the season.
“We’ve been talking. We’ve thrown numbers around,” Waddell said after the Thrashers win against Tampa last night.
Speculation is that the Thrashers are interested in locking up Hossa for 4 years, a deal that would benefit both sides. For one, Waddell wouldn’t need “unanimous ownership approval” as he would if he were to sign a player for five years or more. As for Hossa, a four-year deal would mean he could have “another big contract in him before he hangs up the skates.”
Whatever the length of the contract will be, it’s expected that Hossa will receive Joe Thornton-type money, somewhere around $28-30 million.
But that is just speculation, of course. A formal offer hasn’t been made by the team yet, and Waddell believes that there are a few more things to discuss before an agreement is reached.
“If they were looking for a formal offer, we would have one quickly. I wouldn’t say we’re at that point yet.”
