Will Gauthier fall victim to numbers game?

After adding Kimmo Timonen and Jason Smith to their defense during the off-season, word from Philadelphia is that the Flyers may be looking to part with defensemen Denis Gauthier, Courier Post Online’s Chuck Gormley.

Reports that Mike Rathje is trying to resume his NHL career with the Flyers only adds to speculation that Gauthier may become the odd-man out. Should Rathje be successful in his comeback attempts and return to the team, the Flyers would have to fit his $3.5 million average salary under the cap.

That means Gauthier would have to be moved, either via waivers or through trade.

“Yeah, I was concerned,” Gauthier said Tuesday after a scrimmage with several other Flyers’ veterans. “I wanted to be back. When I signed that two-year (contract) extension I planned on being here the whole two years. I feel like I was a part of getting (junior teammate) Danny Briere to come here. That would have really (ticked) me off, giving up on me after one year.”

However, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren says he is not actively looking to trade Gauthier.

“I’m not shopping Denis around,” Holmgren said. “I expect Denis to have a good season for us.”
