Would Maple Leafs trade Sundin? Could he end up with the Red Wings?
According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun and Jim Matheson’s of The Edmonton Journal, the Toronto Maple Leafs are willing to move captain Mats Sundin if he were to ask for a trade.
And if he were to be traded, speculation is that Sundin could end up with the Detroit Red Wings.
Apparently, the Swedish players on the Red Wings — namely Nicklas Lidstrom, Tomas Holmstrom, Henrik Zetterberg, Mikael Samuelsson, Andreas Lilja, Johan Franzen and Niklas Kronwall — want Sundin as a teammate.
Garrioch claims that Sundin has received word from some of his countrymen that “if he’d like to come aboard they will talk GM Ken Holland into making the move.” It’s believed that Holland “wouldn’t need much convincing.”
But what would it take to get Sundin to the Motor City?
Matheson suggests that the Maple Leafs could receive a package of center Jiri Hudler, defenseman Jakub Kindl, and a second-rounder in 2008. And if they play their cards right, the Leafs may be able to get center Valtteri Filppula instead of Hudler.
However, George James Malik of mLive.com isn’t convinced that the Red Wings will want to give up roster players like Filppula or Hudler or top-end prospects such as Kindl for Sundin. They’d want nothing “less than a superstar under 30″ for that sort of a package.
And since this summers’ draft is the deepest in 15 years, the maple Leafs shouldn’t expect a first-round draft pick from the Red Wings, or any other teams.
