Bruins, Blue Jackets and Avalanche scouts, Jagr
Are the Bruins in the market for a goaltender? Which teams were the Blue Jackets, Avalanche scouting Thursday? Could Jaromir Jagr become a UFA next summer?
Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe speculates that the Boston Bruins will try to acquire a proven back-up if injured goaltender Manny Fernandez remains sidelined for an extended period of time.
Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli says he’d prefer that current back-up, rookie Tuukka Rask, play in the minors to develop his game.
“It would be unfair to have him play 10-15 games here,” Chiarelli said. “It’s just not good for his development. I know he feels that he’s ready, but he also understands our plan.”
Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports that two scouts each from the Columbus Blue Jackets and Colorado Avalanche took in the Thursday game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators.
Rossi points out that Blue Jackets head coach Ken Hitchcock has a history with Penguins’ veterans Mark Recchi and Darryl Sydor.
New York Post’s Larry Brooks reports that New York Rangers forward Jaromir Jagr could become an unrestricted free agent if he does not achieve certain performance-based triggers included in his contract.
To guarantee himself a contract and a $8.36 million paycheck for next season, Jagr will have to “score 40 goals or 84 points this season and win one playoff round” or “win any of the NHL’s major trophies.” The Rangers would only have to pay $4.94 million of that, and would be charged the same amount in terms of the salary cap.
If Jagr does become a UFA, John Dellapina of the New York Daily News isn’t sure the Rangers would try to re-sign him.
