Lightning, Numminen, Maple Leafs, and Esche
Would the Lightning trade Dan Boyle? Will heart problems force Teppo Numminen to retire? Is the Maple Leafs GM more concerned about saving his job than the future of his team? What’s up with Robert Esche?
According to The Tampa Tribune’s Erik Erlendsson, the Tampa Bay Lightning may deal pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Dan Boyle if the club is out of the playoff picture by the trade deadline. However, if the club is in a playoff position, the Lightning might want to re-sign Boyle.
WGRZ’s Jeff Woodard reports that Buffalo Sabres defenseman Teppo Numminen will undergo heart surgery. It’s unclear at this time if the surgery is career or season threatening.
Sabres GM Darcy Regier says he feels confident in his current defense core, and does not expect to make “any immediate roster moves until more is learned about Numminen’s future.”
Seeing as how Toronto Maple Leafs GM John Ferguson Jr. is in the last year of his contract, and there’s no extension in sight, David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail reports that he might pull a “panic trade” to keep his job.
Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post Online reports that UFA goalie Robert Esche is hoping to sign an NHL contract before the season starts.
