Lindros, Smith, Berard, and Canucks & Oilers
Is Eric Lindros about to retire? Are the Flyers interested in extending Jason Smith’s contract? What’s up with Bryan Berard? Forwards still on the market.
TSN reports that unrestricted free agent forward Eric Lindros, and Dallas Star NHLPA player representative, will announce his retirement from the league once the PA completes the progress of hiring a new executive director.
Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post Online reports that the Philadelphia Flyers will begin negotiations on a contract extension with defenseman Jason Smith once training camp begins. Smith currently has a salary cap hit of $1.976 million. Should he prolong his contract past this season, his cap hit would remain the same.
Jim Matheson of The Edmonton Journal reports that UFA defenseman Bryan Berard was so desperate to catch on with an NHL team that he accepted an invite for a try-out with the New York Islanders.
According to Matheson, the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers have no interest in the following forwards:
- Centres: Eric Lindros, Jason Allison, Dave Scatchard.
- Wingers: Mike Johnson, Jeff O’Neill, Jeff Friesen, Tony Amonte, Anson Carter.
