Ryder, Red Wings, and the Canucks
Could this be Michael Ryder’s last season with the Canadiens? Which players have the Red Wings invited to try-outs? Are the Canucks still trying to add a scoring forward?
According to Pat Hickey of The Montreal Gazette, the Montreal Canadiens could trade impending unrestricted free agent forward Michael Ryder if they cannot reach an agreement before this season’s trade deadline.
Ryder will earn $2.95 million, and is expected to get a large raise if he performs at his pace from the last three seasons.
Both mLive.com’s George James Malik and Ted Kulfan of The Detroit News reports that the Detroit Red Wings will invite defenseman Brent Sopel to their training camp on a try-out basis.
Red Wings GM Ken Holland told Kulfan that defenseman Jassen Cullimore and forward Aaron Downey will also get an invite.
Ed Willes of The Vancouver Province reports that Vancouver Canucks GM Dave Nonis is still trying to fill the team’s most glaring need, a scoring forward. With around $3 million left under the maximum limit of the salary cap, Nonis says he will have to trade if he is to make a move.
