Salmelainen, Carter, Tjarnqvist, Roenick, and Forsberg
Which team is interested in Tony Salmelainen? Is Anson Carter on his way to the Oilers? Has Daniel Tjarnqvist signed with AK Bars yet? Is Jeremy Roenick still headed for retirement? The latest on Peter Forsberg.
According to Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun the Toronto Maple Leafs are interested in unrestricted free agent forward Tony Salmelainen. The Maple Leafs have apparently held talks with the Finnish-born player.
The Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson reports that the agent for UFA forward Anson Carter has contacted the Edmonton Oilers to express his client’s desire to play for the club again. The Oilers “reportedly would rather use some of their younger prospects.”
Matheson also reports that UFA defenseman Daniel Tjarnqvist is denying he has inked a deal with Ak-Bars Kazan of the Russian Super League. While the possibility remains of him signing with AK Bars, Tjarnqvist says he is still rehabbing “after surgery to repair a pubic bone problem” until November, or later. Playing for Swedish team Djurgardens is also an option.
Word around the league is that UFA forward Jeremy Roenick may not retire after all, according to Jim Gintonio of The Arizona Republic.
Vancouver Canucks forward Markus Naslund tells Jim Jamieson of The Vancouver Province that longtime friend and UFA forward Peter Forsberg is still rehabbing form ankle surgery.
“I honestly don’t know where he’s at right now,” said Naslund. “I know his main concern was that he’s feeling healthy and that his foot was holding up. He didn’t skate a whole lot when I was back there. I don’t expect him to sign with anyone anytime soon.”
