Scouts at Sharks/Canucks game, Niedermayer and Selanne, Bouwmeester, Scatchard, Markov, Redden, and Gauthier

Which teams were scouting the Sharks and Canucks last Friday? Have Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne made up their minds about playing this season? Are the Panthers still trying to sign Bouwmeester? Do the Maple Leafs want to sign Dave Scatchard? Which teams are still interested in Danny Markov? Have the Senators discussed a new deal with Wade Redden? Why did the Flyers place Denis Gauthier on waivers?

David Pollak of the Mercury News reports that scouts from eight teams were present at Friday night’s game between the visiting San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks.

The New Jersey Devils, Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild and Philadelphia Flyers were each represented by a scout, while the Boston Bruins had two watching the game.

Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports that the Anaheim Ducks are still awaiting a decision from defenseman Scott Niedermayer and unrestricted free agent forward Teemu Selanne on their playing future.

“As far as those two players, they’ve been given an opportunity to make that decision over the course of time, and we’ll live with that decision,” [Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle] said.

Brian Biggane of the Palm Beach Post that the Florida Panthers are continuing their attempts to sign defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to a contract extension before he becomes a UFA in 2009.

According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, the Toronto Maple Leafs are pondering signing UFA forward Dave Scatchard for depth purposes.

The Devils and Bruins remain interested in UFA defenseman Danny Markov, reports Garrioch. However, it’s believed the blueliner’s asking price of more than $2.5 million per season is scaring them away.

Garrioch also reports that the Ottawa Senators are yet to begin negotiations on a contract extension with pending UFA defenseman Wade Redden. The Senators are said to want to get pending RFA Jason Spezza under contract first before making any offers to Redden. If a deal with Redden isn’t reached by the trade deadline, the Senators may consider putting him on the trade block.

Lastly from Garrioch, he claims that the Flyers placed defenseman Denis Gauthier with the hope of another team claiming him and his $2.1 million salary on re-entry waivers.

  1. Just liked to say that Ottawa Senators should give Wade Redden
an extended contract, even though he struggled last year. He has been with them for 10 years, and has only struggled one year. He is an awesome player, and does a lot for the team. Don’t let him get away, sign him!!!!

  2. Will the Senators be able to afford Redden, though?

They already have Heatley at $7+ million, Spezza will probably be in and around $7 million per season, their two goalies come in at about $7 million… that’s a lot of $$$ invested in so few players.

Unless he takes a major pay cut to stay in Ottawa, what are the chances the Sens can fit under the cap?
