Ducks’ Penner signs offer sheet with Oilers
TSN is reporting that the Edmonton Oilers have tendered an offer sheet to Anaheim Ducks restricted free agent forward Dustin Penner.
The five year, $21.25 million offer sheet handed out to Penner is the second attempt by the Oilers to snatch an RFA from another team. Early last month, Oilers GM Kevin Lowe made a seven-year, $50 million offer to Buffalo Sabres forward Thomas Vanek. The Sabres matched the offer and retained Vanek.
Should the Ducks decide to not match the Oilers’ offer, they will receive “a first-round draft pick as well as a second-round pick and a third-round choice.” If the Ducks do match the offer, they will find themselves over the $50.3 million salary cap ceiling. They would have until Oct. 1 to get under the cap. The Ducks currently sit at around $48 million.
Neither Penner nor the Oilers plan on making any comments regarding the situation until a resolution comes about.
“We’re going to wait and see what happens here in the next seven days before we make a comment,” Penner’s agent Gerry Johannson told The Canadian Press.
