Carolina Hurricanes–post trade deadline

As usual, I’m a day (or more) late and a dollar (or more) short.  I was supposed to write a pre-trade deadline post about what the Hurricanes could possibly do on Trade Deadline day.  Part of the reason I didn’t write it is because who the heck ever knows what Jim Rutherford is going to [...]

The Roots of the Beard

“Nobody can be successful if he doesn’t love his work, love his job.” – David Sarnoff
And yes, I love this job. Thanks to Alin Mateescu and staff for bringing me to RMT.

Arguably, the best fan-centric franchise in the NHL resides at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. In their fledgling nine years, as [...]

I’ll be updating this column weekly, tracking the season of the New York Islanders.
Games:
10/23/08- Islanders 3, Dallas Stars 5
10/25/08- Islanders 3, Carolina Hurricanes 4
News and Notes:

- Starting goalie Rick Dipietro apparently injured himself again during the Carolina game.  His [...]

Could There be a Second Hockeytown?

An article posted on TSN this morning is beginning to stir up a lot of discussion about the NHL in Toronto. The article suggests that National Hockey League officials think the Toronto hockey market is big and strong enough to have a second team. An anonymous governor of the NHL said “Why shouldn’t we put another team in the biggest and best market in the world?” Other executives around the NHL seemed to have no idea about this. Jim Rutherford of the Carolina Hurricanes said he had not heard anything like this at the meetings he had been at.

Islanders Week In Review

I’ll be updating this column weekly, tracking the season of the New York Islanders. The big story thus far has been the inactivity of franchise goalie Rick Dipietro. He finally received his first start of the year against Florida on Saturday night and let in a goal early on. However, he settled down afterwards and played reasonably well, keeping the Islanders in the game.

Carolina Hurricanes Season Preview

Well, when your biggest training camp invite is a guy who used to play for the team (and pretty well too), had a couple of DUI’s, was caught pissing in public, and spent last season playing in a beer league then there is the possibility of disaster on the horizon. (**Good news, since writing this, Jeff O’Neill and the ‘Canes have parted ways, realizing he wasn’t really going to make the team**) Then your captain has his knee “cleaned up” after missing half of last season recovering from surgery on said knee. And then one of your top forwards has a freak “off-ice training” accident, tearing his Achilles and has to have surgery, may be out up to 6 months.

NHL In Europe?

A report given by the Globe and Mail stated that the NHL has publicly announced the possibility of expanding to teams overseas. Seemingly overnight, this speculation has spawned garrulous debate about possible expansion; from newspaper articles to blog pages across the continent. Although they do not expect that this expansion has an adequate timeline, the NHL expects the possibility of it materializing within the next 10 years.

Draft Day Frenzy

The 2008 entry draft is two days away. At this point too many things are happening to believe no trades will take place. Here are some final rumours.

Panthers’ Playoff Hopes

Thoughts and speculation on the Florida Panthers playoffs hopes.

Senators potential off-season departures, and re-acquisitions

Will Mike Commodore re-sign? Is the club negotiating with Wade Redden? Will Senators bring back Andre Roy become a Senator, again?

Habs Silently Thank Hurricanes!

The Carolina Hurricanes did the Montreal Canadiens a favor by beating the Ottawa Senators today, meaning that the Habs are still in sole possession of first place in their division.

Emery, Raycroft, Stuart, Leclaire, Sutter, and Hossa

How much will it cost the Senators to buy out Ray Emery? Will Maple Leafs buy out Andrew Raycroft? Does Brad Stuart want to sign with Western Conference team only? When will the Blue Jackets start contract talks with Pascal Leclaire? Are the Hurricanes trying to sign Brandon Sutter? Why did Marian Hossa leave the Thrashers?

RFAs, Tanabe, and the Blues

Which RFAs will get re-signed before they hit the market? Can the Hurricanes buy out David Tanabe? Will the Blues seek to improve their offense this summer?

Jagr, York, Laraque, and Tanabe

Do the Rangers want to bring back Jaromir Jagr? Is Mike York playing for his next contract? Is Georges Laraque on his way out of Pittsburgh? Will Hurricanes buy out David Tanabe?
