A short summary of the opening night contest between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In a way the Detroit Red Wings have one of the toughest jobs in hockey this coming season – defending the Stanley Cup. Detroit was the last team to win back to back championships (in ‘97 and ‘98) and is considered a favorite to repeat in ‘08-’09 – which is saying a lot in an era where repeats are rare and more often than not a team wins the Cup and finds their roster cracked open before the start of the next season, the pieces of their Stanley Cup puzzle scattered into free agency, priced out of the team’s salary cap allowances after having proven their worth all the way to the ultimate prize.
Both Brad Stuart and Andreas Lilja, who were core defenceman in Detroit’s Championship, re-signed with the Red Wings Tuesday. Meanwhile, goalie Ty Conklin was also brought on board.

Last Saturday in game no.2 of the post season series between the Detroit Red Wings, and the Dallas Stars Chris Osgood, and Mike Ribeiro both got their sticks a little high, but no suspensions were given.
The second round of the play-offs will be as good, if not better than the first round. With all the interesting match-ups for the next round, it’s hard to say which one will be the best to watch.
