Season starts off with a bang in Detroit for…The Maple Leafs!
A short summary of the opening night contest between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
A short summary of the opening night contest between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In a way the Detroit Red Wings have one of the toughest jobs in hockey this coming season – defending the Stanley Cup. Detroit was the last team to win back to back championships (in ‘97 and ‘98) and is considered a favorite to repeat in ‘08-’09 – which is saying a lot in an era where repeats are rare and more often than not a team wins the Cup and finds their roster cracked open before the start of the next season, the pieces of their Stanley Cup puzzle scattered into free agency, priced out of the team’s salary cap allowances after having proven their worth all the way to the ultimate prize.
Next year could prove to be what many hockey circles across the globe are calling the NHL’s most abundantly-laden, super-star draft ever.
Bringing the Stanley cup is a joy few people can feel, think about it coaches, gms and owners demand many things from a star player like playing 82 games, scoring over 70 points, and having a great plus minus average, and that’s without playoffs taken into account. I have no doubt in my mind it’s a challenge few are up to, after all its way more difficult than winning the Superbowl, sorry NFL fans, and I’m certain one of the keys to do it is to continue with that DESIRE TO WIN NO MATTER WHAT.
So many talented players, only one Conn Smythe Winner. Who are the best players? We know who the best players are. Who’s the ultimate MVP? That we could know as early as Monday. Who should win the Conn Smythe? I have a pretty good idea…
It’s time for another edition of “Deep Thoughts.” In this installment, I take enjoyment in the struggles of Carey Price, wonder how moronic Darian Hatcher actually is, marvel at the scouting prowess of the Detroit Red Wings, show the Dallas Stars some respect, and pass along some links and video. Enjoy.
Is Michael Ryder on the block? Who would the Penguins part with for some scoring help? What will Henrik Zetterberg cost the Red Wings to re-sign him? How much money do the Flames have to re-sign their free agents? Where might Marian Hossa if he hits free agency? Do the Thrashers have any interest in Dick Tarnstrom? Will return of suspended player force Maple Leafs to make some roster move? Is Igor Grigorenko still heading back to Russia?
Are the Senators shopping Martin Gerber? Did the Lightning try to move Marc Denis? What are the Red Wings’ plans with Henrik Zetterberg? Would the Thrashers ever trade Marian Hossa? Which Bruins player did the Wild really want in the Manny Fernandez deal? Will Mats Sundin and Andrew Raycroft finish the season with the Maple Leafs? Is Jeff Friesen headed to Sweden? Can Jamie McLennan make a comeback with the Flames?
According to the Detroit Free Press, Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland is interested in adding a forward and perhaps re-signing defenseman Danny Markov before the start of the NHL season.
Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post Online complied a list of teams that are “believed to be interested” in Philadelphia Flyers Peter Forsberg and “what they might be willing to give up to get him.”
