The New York Islanders open up the season with an intriguing blend of veteran players and youthful exuberance. How all these pieces blend together (and whether or not any one of them can achieve 25 goals) is anyone’s guess right now.

It really doesn’t get much worse than having your hated rivals clinch a playoff spot by beating your team on it’s home ice… and shutting them out, no less.

The shootout goal wasn’t the prettiest of Daniel Briere’s career, but it was certainly an important one.

Sidney Crosby returned to the ice last night after sitting out the last few games with his high ankle sprain. He shouldn’t have bothered.

Will the REAL New York Islanders please stand up?
Twenty four hours after getting taken apart by Philadelphia (in part due to a lack of discipline and and inability to get organized defensively), the Isles dished out a little payback to the Flyers’ Pennsylvania neighbors, the Pittsburgh Penguins. What a beginning to Kyle Okposo’s career. The highly touted prospect of the New York Islanders scored his first NHL goal last night (the Game Winning goal, no less) and contributed an assist in the Islanders’ 3-1 win over the New Jersey Devils last night at the Prudential Center. The win broke New York’s losing streak at 6 games. Blake Comeau and Trent Hunter (empty netter) also contributed goals for the Islanders. Travis Zajac tallied for the Devils.

It was a typical Good News-Bad News day in Islander country yesterday. On the plus side, highly touted prospect Kyle Okposo made his NHL debut and acquitted himself well, showing glimpses of his vast potential in the 3-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. On the negative slant, the team revealed that All Star goalie Rick Dipietro will undergo his second operation in two years on his injured hip, certainly ringing warning bells among the Islander faithful.

The New York Islanders…the NHL’s version of Groundhog’s Day. If one were to compose a template for reporting on the remaining games on the schedule, it would read something like this: “The team worked hard….the kids gained experience….Rick Dipietro played well but had no offensive support….New York has no one who can put the puck in the net on a regular basis”.

Have a couple of Penguins asked for trades out of town? Are the Sharks still looking to deal Patrick Marleau? Can Ray Giroux get back into the NHL in the off-season? Which players might the Blue Jackets move if they fall out of the playoff race? Could the red Wings end up with Jaromir Jagr? What other deals were the Ducks working on before moving Andy McDonald? Is Kyle Okposo close to becoming an NHLer? Which Penguins defenseman might the Hurricanes have some interest in?
