”Goaltending is a normal job, sure. How would you like it in your job if every time you made a small mistake, a red light went on over your desk and 15,000 people stood up and yelled at you.” – Jacques Plante

Pride is good in small doses, but never something to depend on. With last nights’ varying adjustments in pride, attitude, and stripping away false senses of security, the bottom eight of both Conferences as well as that elusive shot at the Prize of the West, are anything but solid.

The firestorm from Calgary arrived in Charlotte, and an eager Canes band, newly re-united with Eric Cole proceeded to put them out like a dog soaking a lit cigarette in the street. Any boost the recent trade deadline produced, coupled with the win over Philadelphia was sufficiently damped.

I don’t think this was truly much more than a bad shift of the moon and just one of those nights that the best intentions go awry. Calgary was at least present during the game, but flat. They certainly owed their goaltender Curtis McElhinney more than they have delivered to him in his 13 NHL appearances.

On the flipside, it has been nice to see Sergei Samsonov in the similar form he was as an Edmonton Oiler, with the Moscow native netting 2 points, and the game winning goal.

While not an utterly critical game for the Flames, it was a necessary duece for the Hurricanes, who remain on the cusp of a Playoff hunt.

The Great One led his pack of canine-like creatures into the Herd to tangle in Buffalo. And now you know what it sounds like when a great crushing occurs.

Even with the best efforts of Ilya Bryzgalov and one of my favorite defencemen, Ken Klee, Maxim Afinegenov and the Slug pack pulled a win out of the hat. Even if watching Klee bank Afinegenov off of the boards like a five cent bouncy ball made me hold me breath for a moment.

With one point and one game separating the Sabres once again from the Stanley Cup Playoffs it was a do or die game delivered to throngs of blue and gold from familiar names like Jason Pominville and Tim Connolly. Having Patrick Lalime minding the net for Buffalo’s injured Miller Time hasn’t been a bad call on Lindy Ruff’s part, either.

A Sabres win tonight against Ottawa will bounce Pittsburgh out of the Top 8, and Buffalo into the golden block.

Nothing says retribution like playing against the team that traded you only two weeks before. But for Mathieu Schneider, it’s a full circle come to life as the current Habs defenceman plays on the roster of the very man who centered his 1993 Stanley Cup victory against the Los Angeles Kings, Guy Carbonneau. It would not only be the last time the Canadiens would hold the Cup, but the last time they would even see the Stanley Cup Finals since.

Unfortunately, with the way Les Habitats played in Philips Arena, minus the obvious work of Schneider and excellent goaltending of Cary Price, Playoff dreams could potentially slip away. The play was lackluster and uninspired at best.

Atlanta, however, actually brought a game to the arena to give the fans something other than the door prizes to take home. At the worst, it would have made a South Park caricature.

Carbo believes that the Habs brought some effort. I didn’t see it. Except for when young Zach Bogosian took a healthy beating with a smile on the assaulting Hab’s face. That was like warm cocoa on a cold winter night.

Skate ‘em, Carbo, for old time’s sake.

St. Louis met the Lightning at home in Tampa Bay’s St. Pete Times Forum, where they proceeded to sing a song of good ole hockey that gave the Bolts the blues. In typical fashion, Tampa responded to a 3 goal deficit in the third period with their own set of three to force overtime.

But there would be no tacos.

First, they were in Tampa. Second, in sudden death overtime, a forth goal was the night’s limit.

Since that made no sense to most hockey greenhorns, I’ll explain it. Before the infamous Hockey Lockout of 2004-2005, local Taco Bell restaurants in the St. Louis area offered thirty-five cent tacos the day following a Blues game when the Blues scored five goals or more. On the forth goal, the crowd would begin to chant, “We Want TACOS!”

And I’m going to miss Gary Roberts. It was an honor to have him grace the Bolts jersey.

In a must-win battle for the potential 8th seed in the West, the Dallas Stars and 10th ranked Anaheim Ducks met in a battle royale. The Stars, in an onslaught once again spearheaded by Ribiero and backended by Marty Turco, show us what the Dallas Stars do best on the ice, divide and conquer.

They continually kept Anaheim split on the forecheck, drove a triangle pattern to the net, and somehow it worked. I haven’t seen much of Anaheim this year, but it appears the Ducks are flying south, with the Stars rising into the eighth slot. With the matchup of Edmonton and Toronto, the future of that slot remains insecure.

The bottom ranks of the East and West are shifting day to day, so get ready for March’s Hairy Ride to the Finish.

And that, my friends, is hockey as we know it.

All too often I lament “It’s the Kings” and “There’s always next year”, but I do think it is inconceivable that the Kings will finish in the cellar again. A new coach, young talent, and even younger prospects bring much hope for the franchise. And hope is really all Kings fans have this season. It is doubtful the Kings will be able make a run at the playoffs but they will show what they have in store for the future. As the preseason dwindles down to a close the Kings roster is gradually taking shape. Each day a prospect is sent back to Juniors or the AHL another veteran player sighs in relief of not being placed on waivers (unless your name is Matt Ellis).

The most famous and beloved Kings prospect, goaltender Jonathan Bernier, was recently sent to the Manchester Monarchs. Even though Bernier showed much promise during the prospects camp and training camp, it was still doubtful he was going to earn one of the two goaltending roster spots. He may have come a long way from last season but would he have benefited from having another season start like the one last year? It’s in his best interest as a young developing goalie to take the extra time to build up his physical and mental game. However, if the Kings’ goaltending woes from previous years continue this season he may eventually see some playing time.

Additional prospects continue to hang around making notable outings in each preseason game. Forwards Oscar Moller and Wayne Simmonds are still with the team and each brings a different style of play that could be beneficial to the already young team. Moller’s small frame is the biggest factor that could prevent him from making the jump this season but his quickness and finesse are things the Kings could use. Simmonds is a gritty, in your face character, something the Kings need more of, that can also provide help on offense. Last season in the OHL he moved from the Owen Sound Attack to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and totaled 75 points and 111 PIM. The knocks against Simmonds is that he hasn’t had much experience duking it out with NHL caliber players and he’s a relatively light 175 lbs on a 6′-2″ frame.

Fans outside of LA are finally taking notice of Kings superstars Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown. Expect even bigger seasons from these two as they’ve been playing on a line together for quite some time. The question right now is who will be blessed to play alongside them? If Patrick O’Sullivan remains unsigned, then the likely player to fill the role is Matt Moulson. He played several games with the Kings last season but spent most of the time with the Monarchs. He’s played with Kopitar and Brown during preseason games and looks right at home. Not only is he an unknown gifted forward, but he has a pretty decent defensive game too.

Forwards Teddy Purcell and Brian Boyle will also most likely stay in LA. Purcell should provide additional scoring if he can find his touch in the NHL and Boyle should use his size to provide a strong presence as the fourth line center, that is if he decides to actually use his size to his advantage. Newly acquired Jarrett Stoll will provide the Kings with faceoff and special teams talent and seems poised to play alongside the token Russian, Alexander Frolov. If Purcell ends up on the top line or O’Sullivan finally signs, Stoll and Frolov will be put with Moulson, giving the Kings a very strong second line.

Kevin Westgarth and Richard Clune will fight for the second tough guy spot alongside resident enforcer Raitis Ivanans, that is if the Kings decide to keep another of that kind on the team. Westgarth has the size at 6′-5″ 247 lbs, but that’s pretty much all he has to offer. Clune is a better agitator, touting himself as the most hated player in the AHL last season and has better skills, but he’s out with an injury and won’t be healed for some time. Considering how much talent the Kings will have up top, it seems unnecessary to carry two enforcers with limited skill. However it is reassuring to know there are additional brutes in the pipeline in case Ivanans falls to another nasty injury.

Jack Johnson and Tom Preissing are the top defensemen this year. Joining the defensive ranks are Sean O’Donnell, Matt Greene, Denis Gauthier, Peter Harrold, and 2008 First Round Draft pick Drew Doughty. With just under a week left till the season opener, it appears as though Jason LaBarbera has secured the number one goaltending spot despite having shaky performances during several preseason games. At the end of last season Erik Ersberg probably thought he had the No. 2 spot locked up but Jonathan Quick is not going down without a battle, but I think the Swede will eventually succeed. It’s no secret that the Kings defense, most notably goaltending, is suspect; the Kings will look to reduce their goals against average and improve clearing the zone and entering the offensive area. The defensemen and goalies will battle each other for the title of “Kings Achilles Heel” and right now it’s completely up for grabs.

Next year could prove to be what many hockey circles across the globe are calling the NHL's most abundantly-laden, super-star draft ever.

Next year could prove to be what many hockey circles across the globe are calling the NHL’s most abundantly-laden, super-star draft ever.

One such potential super-star that is making newspaper articles and water-cooler office talk around the country is mega-prospect John Tavares. Unless you’ve never watched a hockey newscast, you would have to be living in a cave for the last two years, not to hear this 17 year-old sensation’s name. Tavares first started grabbing headlines in the summer of 2005 when he was the first player ever to be granted “exceptional player” status by the OHL, which allowed him to be drafted at the age of 14; months before his 15th birthday. Already being dubbed by TSN experts as the next ‘Next One’ behind wunderkind Sidney Crosby, this exceptional player has amassed quite a resume thus far.

In three seasons, playing for the Oshawa Generals of the OHL, he has collected 157 goals and 329 points in only 191 games, and he started when he was 15! Perhaps one of his greatest and most notable achievements to add to his list of accolades is his record breaking 72 goal sophomore season as a 16 year-old which surpassed Wayne Gretzky in that department. He is certainly shaping up to be a super-star NHL player, although perhaps not in the same mold as Gretzky, Lemieux and Crosby, as one of his most glaring flaws is his skating. Although he had an amazing 06-07 campaign as a 16 year-old, last year in the 07-08 season his numbers dipped tremendously, for a player of his caliber.

Obviously, Tavares would prefer to go #1 in the draft this upcoming season, as last year he missed the cut by 5 days, he was then considered a boy amongst men. His spot will be contingent on how well he performs in his last season as an Oshawa General.

It’s hard to imagine this phenomenon of a player has any competition for the number 1 spot in this year’s draft, but alas, he does. Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman is making headway to the top of the 09 draft.

Often mentioned in the same breath as fellow country man and six-time Norris trophy winner Niklas Lidstrom, Hedman has quickly drawn favorable comparisons to the Anaheim Ducks’ Chris Pronger. Certainly, there will be doubters, especially with the recent trend of over hyped prospects emerging out of Europe. Including but not limited to: classic late-bloomer Fabian Brunnstrom, who has yet to step foot on NHL ice, but is already drawing comparisons to Henrik Zetterberg and Daniel Alfredsson, which mind you is very possible, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. Lest we forget glorified Toronto Maple Leaf defenseman Anton Stralman, who by many accounts from over-zealous Maple Leaf followers is considered to be the next Bobby Orr.

However, while these players receive warranted attention, this particular 6’6, 220lbs defenseman is considered the complete player. He skates like the wind and plays a risky, bordering on dirty game, and completes that with sublime offensive skills. Last year at the age of 17, he was playing full-time for MoDo in Sweden’s Elite League (SEL). A paucity in a league deemed to be not that far removed from the caliber of the NHL. This upcoming season, he will be expected to be a staple on the parent squad. He has franchise defenseman written all over him and has proved time and time again, whether it be in the SEL or a circuit in the World Juniors, that he can play with the best of them.

Of course, there are a select few others that may take the ranks of the #1 spot this fall. 2006 1st overall selection of the Spokane Chiefs; Jared Cowen is turning heads in the WHL, and is widely considered to be a lock in the top 5. Another standout comes from the WHL, his name is Brayden Schenn. Sibling to Toronto Maple Leaf’s first round selection Luke Schenn. Unlike his brother, he plays forward. In his inaugural season, he amassed 28 goals and 43 assists, for 71 points in 66 games. By all accounts, he is expected to improve on those numbers with aplomb. Rounding out the top 5 is Swedish prospect; Magnus Svensson-Pääjärvi. A name I still have trouble trying to pronounce, this slick Swede is being mentioned in the same breath as Ilya Kovalchuck. While these players have an amazing amount of skill, scouts across the globe believe that the number 1 pick belongs to one of John Tavares or Victor Hedman. This upcoming season will be the mitigating factor in which we see these potential franchise players end up.

Personally, I believe that these two players have an inordinate amount of talent. They are both masters at their craft and equally skilled in their own regard. That is why I imagine that when D-day arrives, it will be a choice of position rather than skill. For years, the philosophy amongst NHL GM’s is that they will always take the best player available. While that statement still rings true, I believe that these two franchise players are equal in talent and will ultimately be up to the specific teams needs.

For the purpose of simplicity, let’s analyze only the projected bottom five teams of this years’ NHL season. The Atlanta Thrashers, New York Islanders, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings & St. Louis Blues all have a legitimate shot and receiving the 1st overall pick this June.

With Ilya Kovalchuk’s contract coming to a completion at the conclusion of the 09-10 season, the Atlanta Thrashers will be desperate for offence.

Furthermore, with the inclusion of recently drafted Zach Bogosian, they already have a potential franchise defenseman. Could the addition of John Tavares entice Kovalchuck to stay? Next is the New York Islanders. Seemingly devoid of any top-line talent at forward or defense, they could go either way. A duo of John Tavares and Kyle Okposo could be very intriguing. However, they are severely lacking in defensive prospects as well. The Toronto Maple Leafs recent drafting of Luke Schenn pretty much eliminates them from choosing Hedman, as they are desperate for a scoring forward.

What better way to replace long-time captain Mats Sundin with home-grown native John Tavares, something that will certainly please Leaf nation. The Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues are two teams that are stock-piled with defensive prospects. While the former has Drew Doughty, Thomas Hickey and Jack Johnson, the latter has Eric Johnson, Alex Pietrangelo and Steve Wagner. These two teams would almost certainly jump at the opportunity to bolster their lineup with some much needed offense.

At first glance, it almost seems that the glaring need for these five bottom-feeding teams is offense, in which John Tavares certainly fits the bill. But, in what may become one of the biggest debates throughout the NHL’s 08-09 season, it really comes down to choice. Who would you pick?

Toronto Maple Leafs Season Preview

Such a ridiculous claim, but in this post-lockout NHL era, it does not seem so ludicrous. If this new era has taught us anything, it is that in order to be triumphant, a team must build from within in order to garner success. This rebuilding phase officially began for the Leafs in February of last season, when newly-appointed GM Cliff Fletcher stated that the team would have a new look when October came around. Former GM John Ferguson Jr.’s misdeeds aside, GM Fletcher knew right from the get-go that a significant change would be needed. For me, amongst many supporters, that change officially began on June 20th of this past year. On that day, the Leafs drafted blue-chip, cant-miss prospect Luke Schenn. With the highest draft pick the Maple Leafs have had since fan-favorite Wendel Clark was drafted first overall in 1985, they officially began this re-building phase.

Now some of you may say; the last four years have been horrendous for Leaf fans. They have had to endure a half-decade long playoff drought; so, the Leafs must make the playoffs. Others would say; rebuilding a team is a process, this method takes time. This recent trend of black and white thinking has become an eternal struggle, it is an argument I have had with many followers of the Maple Leafs. Though I do not have a dogmatic, narrow-minded view of the current Maple Leaf situation, I am inclined to agree with the latter. Simply because while the Maple Leafs do have a myriad of future assets including but not limited to; Jiri Tlusty, Nikolai Kulemin, Justin Pogge and the newly-acquired Mikhail Grabovski, to name a few. None of these potential stars really stands out to attain the status of super-star. Now that they have finally obtained one of these superstars in Luke Schenn, it is time to acquire someone equally as high in status and talent to launch the Maple Leafs into triumph.

Take a second to look around the league, while the most extreme example being the Pittsburgh Penguins (Crosby, Malkin, Fleury) there are many others around the league who have had high draft picks over the last few years and will surely be successful in the near future. Perhaps the most talked about turn-around in hockey, the Chicago Blackhawks, have a dynamic duo in Jonathan Toews (3rd overall in 06) and Patrick Kane (1st overall in 08) to go along with their abundance of other career NHLers such as Cam Barker, Dave Bolland and Jack Skille. The Los Angeles Kings who have been quietly stock-piling future talent for years, made there biggest splash this year with 2nd overall pick Drew Doughty to accompany future stalwart Jack Johnson (3rd overall in 05). Another standout of course is Wayne Gretzky’s new and improved Phoenix Coyotes who acquired Danish prospect Mikkel Boedker (8th overall in 08) to complement Kyle Turris (3rd overall in 07) and Peter Mueller (8th overall in 06). FYI: I firmly believe these aforementioned teams will be a top the NHL standings in no later than two years.

These are just mere examples of what the Leafs are now facing. But one thing is abundantly obvious; most dominant teams are built on at least two or three standout prospects. It has been 41 years since the great city of Toronto has seen the Leafs hoist the Stanley Cup. Is it really too much to ask to endure one more season of failure? Personally, I do not wish for a top 10 pick, I believe it’s imperative to obtain a top 3 pick. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the choice between mega-prospects John Tavares, Victor Hedman and Luke Schenn’s brother; Brayden, among others. The Maple Leafs have been mired in mediocrity for so many years, it has certainly become an exercise in futility. Many Leaf followers wish for the return of Mats Sundin and for some strange reason, Maple Leaf brass is seemingly leaving the door open for his return. The team Cliff Fletcher has fielded for the 08-09 season has hockey pundits everywhere saying that not only is this team not good enough to make the playoffs, they will be lucky to escape with the 13th spot in the Eastern Conference. It is almost set in stone that the Leafs are a shoe-in for another playoff mishap for the fifth consecutive year. With presumably the only bottom-feeders below them being the Garth Snow inflicted; New York Islanders and the one-pony show; Atlanta Thrashers. So if Sundin loyalties get their wish, it is my belief that it may only move them up a mere one, maybe two spots in the standings. Is that really what we want? You really have to ask yourselves Leaf-fans, do you want another Nik Antropov in the 09 draft, or someone who can vault this team to Stanley Cup success? So I implore you Leaf fans, as a life-long fan myself, we must lose, really lose, to win.

Frank Mazzola: You were drafted 8th overall in 1994. Obviously, being selected that high comes with high expectations. Did you feel any adverse pressure to perform because of this and, if so, how did the pressure affect your approach to the game?

Jason Wiemer: There was definitely pressure, but I think, being that young, I didn’t even realize the magnitude of it. Looking back now, the ignorance was probably a blessing.

FM: You’ve played with 6 different teams (Tampa Bay, Calgary, Florida, New York Islanders, Minnesota Wild, New Jersey) during your career. Where was your favorite place to play and why (location, fans, the area…etc.)?

JW: Of course, playing in Florida was nice. However, my favorite place was Minnesota. They have a great organization, some of the best coaches and fantastic fans.

FM: Tell us about the most memorable goal you scored in the NHL.

JW: It would have to be my first one. I would like to tell you it was end to end, top shelf, but I’d be lying. It was against Quebec and I think it went off my shin pad. But it was my first N.H.L goal and it was pretty exciting.

FM: Were there any particular players you dreaded suiting up against (due to their skill, fighting ability…etc)?

JW: I don’t know if I dreaded playing anyone, but there were a few I didn’t look forward to. Tony Twist was a guy that made you look over your shoulder. I was lucky enough to play against some of the game’s greats like Lemieux, Gretzky and Messier. Playing guys like that was always a thrill and something I’ll never forget

FM: Who was your least favorite goalie to face and why?

JW: I’d have to say Hasek. He was in his prime and was pretty much unbeatable. Not to mention, he would be out in the corner playing pucks or at the blue line, flopping around like a fish.

FM: Hockey players are notorious for having pre-game and season-long rituals. Can you share with us any particular superstitions or routines you might have employed during your career?

JW: Actually, I was one of the rare ones that tried not to get wrapped up in superstitions. Maybe that’s because I never got on a long enough hot streak to keep doing the same thing (laughs).

FM: How did the game change from the time you were drafted up until the end of your career? What sorts of adjustments did you have to make to adapt?

JW: The game has changed in many ways in the last fifteen years. I think the biggest difference has been the size of the players. When I was drafted, teams were all about big guys. Now, they are leaning towards the smaller, faster players. The most important thing for me was to get faster. I dropped six or seven pounds to try and accomplish that.

FM: Now that you are retired, do you have any plans to seek employment within the league (coaching, player agent, league official… etc.)?

JW: I don’t have any plans to get back involved with the NHL, but I am doing some coaching here in Calgary [ Note: Jason is instructing this summer at National Sports Development, a youth hockey camp.]. It’s been fun to stay involved in the game and pass on any knowledge I may have learned to young players.

FM: Has the labor dispute which caused the cancellation of the 2004-05 season affected the relationship between the owners and the players? How did you spend your time during the lockout?

JW: I don’t know if has affected the relationship that much. As you can see, the players are still making big salaries, some even bigger than before. So, I think the players are happy with the new CBA. As for the lockout, I spent most of the time doing things I wasn’t able to do when I was playing…. a lot of hunting, fishing, hiking and skiing. It’s a good thing I could play hockey because…well, I’m a really bad skier (laughs).

FM: In your opinion, can the salary cap continue to rise in the NHL despite falling revenue and flagging interest in the American market? Are the salaries that recent free agents have received out of line with the current economic state of the league?

JW: I don’t know if it can or not. Its funny, though: Before the lockout, all the owners were crying bankruptcy and now they’re paying out more than they were. The amount and length of some of the contracts is concerning, but wiser men than me are running these organizations. So, hopefully, the league will continue to thrive in Canadian markets and grow in some of the American ones

FM: Jason, thanks very much for your time. Good luck with the hockey camp and your other future endeavors.

JW: Thank you.

Stuart played in 9 regular season games, after being dealt at the deadline by the Los Angeles Kings, with Detroit recording 2 points and a plus 6.
Conklin’s signing was a big surprise (at least for me) that July 1st had. Conklin started in 33 regular season games with 18 wins and a .923 save percentage. He didn’t start any playoff games.

Fluto Shinzawa of The Boston Globe reports that the reason the Philadelphia Flyers were willing to part with pending RFA forward Jeff Carter and a first-round draft pick for Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle, is because of financial concerns.

The belief is that Carter will seek a similar deal to the one signed by teammate Mike Richards, who signed a 12-year, $69 million contract extension earlier in the season. Carter and Richards have similar career statistics, and so would be comparables during negotiations.

Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch suggests that the Columbus Blue Jackets may re-sign pending UFA forward Michael Peca because he has a great “dressing room presence” and could help guide Rick Nash through the “early stages” of his captaincy.

Portzline also speculates that the Buffalo Sabres will botch contract negotiations with goaltender Ryan Miller much in the same way they did with forwards Chris Drury and Daniel Briere, and defenseman Brian Campbell.

Miller is set to become a UFA after the 2008-09 season, and word is that he already sees himself playing for the Detroit Red Wings in 2009-10. A native of East Lansing, Michigan, Miller is also good friends with Red Wings goaltending coach Jim Bedard.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun suggests that if the Toronto Maple Leafs can’t trade forward Darcy Tucker, they should buy him out.

A buy out would cost the Maple Leafs two-thirds of Tucker’s $6 million contract; the club would be on the hook for a $1 million cap hit per season, over six years.

Garrioch also wonders if teams like the Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks may put in an offer sheet to Montreal Canadiens pending restricted free agent goalie Jaroslav Halak this summer.

Lastly from Garrioch, he reports that if Boston Bruins struggling forward Glen Murray doesn’t start scoring and help the team earn a playoff spot, he will likely be dealt in the off-season.

Murray’s $4.15 million salary could then be used by the Bruins to try and land Pittsburgh Penguins pending UFA forward Marian Hossa.

Jim Matheson of The Edmonton Journal reports that Los Angeles Kings pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Rob Blake would like to continue his NHL career for one or two more seasons. And preferably with the Kings.

However, for that to happen, Matheson suggests that the veteran blueliner will have to take a significant pay cut down to around $3 million per season.

Matheson also reiterates earlier reports that the Ottawa Senators can buy out goalie Ray Emery between June 15 and June 30 at one-third of the $6.75 million left on the last two years of his contract. That translates to a salary cap hit of $562,000 each of the next four years. Matheson suggests that that the Senators will indeed take advantage of this opportunity to dump Emery.

Look for the Edmonton Oilers to shop defenseman Joni Pitkanen in the off-season, according to Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch.

Garrioch believes that the New York Islanders will not trade goalie Rick DiPietro despite the friction he and head coach Ted Nolan.

Garrioch also reports that Colorado Avalanche pending UFA goaltender Jose Theodore could be pursued by the Kings and the Tampa Bay Lightning should he decided to go on the market.

More from Garrioch, he reports on a number of non-trades leading up to last month’s trade deadline.

First off, word is that the Philadelphia Flyers were willing to part with forward Jeff Carter and their first round draft pick for Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle. The deal fell through when Kaberle invoked the no-trade clause in his contract.

Secondly, the Atlanta Thrashers were unsuccessful in their attempts to move defenseman Alexei Zhitnik.

Looks like we were on to something: the NHL’s CBA prohibits teams from buying out injured players at two-thirds of their salaries, as Luke DeCock of The News & Observer suggested the Carolina Hurricanes may do with defenseman David Tanabe this summer.

Otherwise, the Hurricanes would be on the hook for Tanabe’s entire $900,000 salary. The good news is that it wouldn’t count against the salary cap.

The Montreal Canadiens won in L.A. over the L.A. Kings 5-2 today in what was pretty much a boring game for the most part.

The Montreal Canadiens won in L.A. over the L.A. Kings 5-2 today in what was pretty much a boring game for the most part.

The Habs scoring broke down like this: Patrice Brisebois, unassisted, Saku Koivu, with assists from Mark Streit, and Andrei Markov, Guillaume Latendresse, from Sergei Kostitsyn, and Josh Gorges, Andrei Kostitsyn, from Tomas Plekanec, and Roman Hamerlik, Tom Kostopoulos, from Latendresse, and Hamerlik. The scoring for the Kings is like this: Rob Blake, from Mike Cammaleri, and Anze Kopitar, and Anze Kopitar, from Patrick O’Sullivan.

The Canadiens played poorly, but apparently they have enough talent to play poorly and win against the worst team in the NHL this year. Jaroslav Halak was the Habs best player making 35 saves, safe to say that if Halak did not make some great saves, the Habs would not have won this one.

The Kings may be one of the worst defensive teams this year but their offensive capabilities are good, and they showed it, all they need is a good goalie, and a couple of defense-man to round out that team next year. Unfortunately for the Kings they ran in to a deep enough team that even if they play poorly, they can still win.

The Canadiens now go to Anaheim to face the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, the Ducks just lost Corey Perry for the rest of the regular season, which will help the Habs, as they will need all the help they can get to beat the defending champions. The Ducks method consists of aggressive for-checking, punishing hits, and great defence. With the Habs playing their last road game on this Western Conference swing, they might be tired, but they’ll have to suck it up and play their best game of the year to beat the Ducks.

Carey Price will make the start against the Ducks, he will be run over, screened, and bothered all game long, hopefully his getting accustomed the NHL big boys style of play is over as the Habs will need him down the stretch. Sunday’s game will be a test not only for the Habs, but for Price as well.

A number of teams, including the Colorado Avalanche, Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks and Ottawa Senators, are said to have called the Kings to inquire about Blake’s availability.

And while it may have been tempting to go to a contender and try to win another Stanley Cup, Blake says that the club’s decision to hang on to him was received well. It was Blake’s desire to remain with the Kings all along.

“I’m happy it worked out the way it did. Yes, going to a contender with a chance to win the Cup was an exciting possibility, but when I signed here two years ago, it was to help this team to improve and make the playoffs. I just wanted them to do whatever they felt was right. It hasn’t quite worked out the way I wanted it to work when I signed here, but there’s a lot of young talent here, a lot of young skilled players and we’ve just got to get some pieces in around them to help them improve.”

Not only did Blake want to finish the season in Los Angeles, but the veteran blueliner is also hoping to sign a one-year contract extension with the Kings. Among his reasons is the fact that the Kings have a bright future ahead of them due to their slew of young and talented players.

“The young guys here just have to make the next step,” said Blake. “Guys like (Alexander) Frolov, (Anze) Kopitar, (Jack) Johnson and (Mike) Cammalleri, these are the guys who get the minutes and they just need to take it to the next step with the right people around them.”

Kings GM Dean Lombardi says that Blake’s return to the club will depend mostly on him.

“A lot of that is going to be up to (Blake),” said Lombardi.

Translation: Blake will have to take a significant pay cut if the Kings are to bring him back. Especially if they have any intentions of chasing other UFAs.

In an effort to reshape their blueline, Garrioch suggests that the Kings may make a play for Senators defenseman Wade Redden, who can hit the open market July 1st.

I’m not sure where this trend started, but I assume it must have been one of the southern teams looking for a gimmick to attract fans to their games.

Now, more and more NHL teams are employing the hockey version of cheerleaders.

The Anaheim Ducks, Atlanta Thrashers, Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Phoenix Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Tampa Bay Lightning all have them. That’s 16 teams.

Three Canadian teams have them, too, including the Calgary Flames, Ottawa Senators, and the Vancouver Canucks.

So, what exactly do Ice Girls do?

Well, according to PuckThatHit.com, this is what the job entails:

Ice Girls often (but not always) step onto the ice, clean away excess snow, wipe down the glass, and of course give away t-shirts. Any excuse to have them parade their increased chest sizes and minuscule waists is good enough for management and fans.

For those interested, there’s a poll over at PuckThatHit.com where you can vote for which team has the best ice girls. There’s pictures, too… pretty pictures… go check ‘em out. I threw in my vote for the Chicago Blackhawks’ Ice Crew.

Anyway, I’m wondering how soon will it be before ALL NHL teams has a crew of Ice Girls dancing in a seat near you? And which team will it be the next in line? Will it be the Buffalo Sabres, Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs, or the Washington Capitals?

This is an unscientific poll, by the way.

It was believed that Blake would only waive his no-trade clause if he could go the Colorado Avalanche.
Nick Kypreos reported on Sportsnet 6:30PM edition that that the Pittsburgh Penguins are shopping one of their young stars. Updated: 8:26PM.

Nick Kypreos reported on Sportsnet’s 6:30PM edition that that the Pittsburgh Penguins are shopping one of their young stars.

According to a person that’s in the know, the Penguins have discussed moving forward Evgeni Malkin with an unnamed Western Conference team.

Kypreos noted the fact that Malkin’s entry-level contract is coming to an end after next year, and the Penguins may not be able to afford his next salary as the reason for shopping him.

Should Malkin win any type of an award, Kypreos suggests that Malkin may seek $10 mil per season. Since the Penguins already have Sidney Crosby tied up at an average of $8.7 million for the next six years and with the likes of Ryan Malone (possibly looking for $4 million per season) and other free agents demanding significant raises, the Penguins may look to deal Malkin.

Kypreos brought up a trade scenario involving Los Angeles Kings forwards Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown, though it was more of a proposal than anything that’s being discussed.

More to come…

On Saturday’s edition of CBC’s Hotstove, the panel discussed a number of big-name players thought to be on the move before the February 26 trade deadline.

First off, Al Strachan stands by his statement last week that Tampa Bay Lightning forward Vincent Lecavalier will ask for a trade in the off-season. Strachan indicated that his source is very reliable and close to Lecavalier, and would have no reason to make up rumors.

Meanwhile, Pierre LeBrun believes that Lecavalier will stay put, and the Lightning will try to trade forward Brad Richards. LeBrun suggests that if asked to be moved, Richards will waive the no-trade clause in his contract. Strachan mentioned the Philadelphia Flyers as a possible destination, with forward Jeff Carter being part of a package heading to Tampa Bay. Scott Morrison added that the Vancouver Canucks may be the best positioned team to acquire Richards, with the Columbus Blue Jackets also having great interest.

Still with the Lightning, Strachan reported that pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Dan Boyle is close to signing a six-year contract extension with the club worth about $7 million per season. LeBrun wasn’t as optimistic, though, as the incoming ownership group still has to approve the deal.

On the Toronto Maple Leafs front, Morrison suggests the defenseman Tomas Kaberle is “mulling” over waiving his no-trade clause for a move to an Eastern Conference team, thought to be the New York Rangers or Flyers.

As for pending UFA forward Mats Sundin, Morrison noted that the many teams that have expressed a desire to trade (i.e. Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens) for him may be pulling away due to his indecisiveness.

During Saturday’s game between the Maple Leafs and Atlanta Thrashers, the CBC’s Elliotte Friedman reported that defenseman Bryan McCabe is considering waiving his no-movement clause and allow the team to trade him. He is apparently discussing the possibility of playing elsewhere with his family, and could have an answer for Maple Leafs management by week-end’s end. At least one of the two New York teams are said to be interested in McCabe. That would be Rangers, not the Islanders, as many have speculated.

In Los Angeles, Morrison said that Kings pending UFA defenseman Rob Blake will decide within the next 24 hours if he will waive his no-trade clause. Apparently, the Kings have three offers for Blake from the Ducks, Sharks, and the Colorado Avalanche. Strachan doesn’t think Blake will go anywhere.

Speaking of the Ducks, Morrison reported that GM Brian Burke may make a play for Florida Panthers forward Olli Jokinen, if he hasn’t already. However, Burke will not include the first-round draft pick he acquired last off-season from the Edmonton Oilers in any deal.

Strachan reported that the Blue Jackets and pending UFA defenseman Adam Foote are closing in on a 2-3 contract extension worth between $3-4 million per season.

Lastly, LeBrun noted that Thrashers GM Don Waddell took in an AHL game Saturday between the affiliates of the Senators and Maple Leafs. The thought is that Waddell was scouting the Senators’ prospects for a possible deal involving pending UFA Marian Hossa.

Kevin Allen of USA TODAY takes a look at the top buyers and sellers in the Western Conference leading up to the February 26 trade deadline.

Kevin Allen of USA TODAY takes a look at the top buyers and sellers in the Western Conference leading up to the February 26 trade deadline.

Here are the teams said to be looking to bolster their rosters:

1. Anaheim Ducks: With the likelihood that Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne returning to retirement next summer and one Stanley Cup ring already won, general manager Brian Burke has every reason to be aggressive. He has the assets and desire to go after the top available players. Clearly, he will make a play for Sundin, and he will look at most of the premium players. He owns Edmonton’s first-round pick, plus prospects Bobby Ryan, Logan MacMillan and Mark Mitera that he could move, although Burke has said publicly he doesn’t want to move his pick because it could land in the top seven. His objective is to land another premium scorer.

2. San Jose Sharks: More trade rumors have circulated about the Sharks over the past eight months than any other NHL team. The Sharks seem poised to shake up their look heading into the postseason. They could use another scorer and a puck-moving defenseman. They have a strong collection of young players that would be highly desirable, including prospects Logan Couture and Nick Petrecki, plus young NHLers such as Matt Carle. What’s unknown is whether the Sharks, with a history of playoff disappointment, will shake up their mojo by trading away a major veteran, such as Patrick Marleau.

3. Calgary Flames: General manager Darryl Sutter has been digging around the marketplace for a premium scorer for a couple of months. They have enough young prospects to make a strong offer, but don’t ask about Swedish standout Mikael Backlund. He’s not going anywhere.

4. Dallas Stars: Knowing Brett Hull the way I do, it’s a certainty that he would like to land some offensive help. No one is talking much about the Stars, but no one would be shocked if they make a splash. They have played well enough of late to entertain the idea of a long post-season run.

5. Detroit Red Wings: General manager Ken Holland is looking at every possibility of landing a big scorer because Holland always looks at every possibility. He’s made overtures for most of the premium players, but Holland is saying he also doesn’t want to give up his future for a rental player. He believes he has enough depth to be a quality team for a few years if he doesn’t trade it away. The Red Wings will look at defensive depth, but that’s a lower priority than a scorer.

6. Vancouver Canucks: With Roberto Luongo in net, the Canucks have to believe they have a chance to win any playoff series. But they need scoring help. Earlier, the Canucks could have traded defensive depth for scoring, but injuries on the blue line have eliminated that option. Goaltending prospect Cory Schneider is someone a trading partner would like to have.

7. Nashville Predators: No big splash coming this season for general manager David Poile, but he’s looking at his options to acquire scoring depth.

And here are the supposed sellers:

1. Columbus Blue Jackets: Officially the Blue Jackets are undecided about selling because they are still in the playoff race. But it seems likely that they will be the belle of the ball on trade deadline day. If they don’t re-sign Adam Foote, it would seem logical to move him. Sergei Fedorov, Mike Peca, Ron Hainsey, David Vyborny and Jan Heyda are all potential rental players.

2. Los Angeles Kings: Rob Blake has said he doesn’t want to waive his no-trade clause, but my hunch is not all of the cards have been played in his scenario. Essentially, Blake can dictate where he wants to go, and he might still do that. Considering his affinity for the West Coast, the Ducks and Sharks seem like a good possibility. Although the Kings have shown a desire to re-sign Brad Stuart, there is no deal done yet. Stuart also would draw considerable interest, particularly with the lack of available defensemen.

3. St. Louis Blues: If a team is looking for defense, St. Louis is the place to shop. Barret Jackman and Bryce Salvador are both going to be unrestricted free agents this summer, and negotiations between Jackman and the Blues haven’t yielded success thus far. Jay McKee might also be a defenseman of interest, although his $4 million salary in each of the next two seasons puts him on the long-shot list.
