An article posted on TSN this morning is beginning to stir up a lot of discussion about the NHL in Toronto. The article suggests that National Hockey League officials think the Toronto hockey market is big and strong enough to have a second team. An anonymous governor of the NHL said “Why shouldn’t we put another team in the biggest and best market in the world?” Other executives around the NHL seemed to have no idea about this. Jim Rutherford of the Carolina Hurricanes said he had not heard anything like this at the meetings he had been at.

I’ll be updating this column weekly, tracking the season of the New York Islanders. The big story thus far has been the inactivity of franchise goalie Rick Dipietro. He finally received his first start of the year against Florida on Saturday night and let in a goal early on. However, he settled down afterwards and played reasonably well, keeping the Islanders in the game.

The New York Islanders open up the season with an intriguing blend of veteran players and youthful exuberance. How all these pieces blend together (and whether or not any one of them can achieve 25 goals) is anyone’s guess right now.

The 2008 NHL Entry Draft was a highly anticipated event for Islander fans. With the Islanders holding the #5 pick, they were almost assured of coming away with an impact player. However, GM Garth Snow chose to restock the Prospect pool and traded down twice to the #9 spot in order to gain more picks in the second and third rounds. It was a risky move, but it could pay off huge dividends in the future. Here’s a look one of the prospects the Islanders drafted, Kirill Petrov.

He sat down recently with RumorMeThis.com’s Frank Mazzola to discuss the current state of the NHL and to share some perspective about his career.
