An article posted on TSN this morning is beginning to stir up a lot of discussion about the NHL in Toronto. The article suggests that National Hockey League officials think the Toronto hockey market is big and strong enough to have a second team. An anonymous governor of the NHL said “Why shouldn’t we put another team in the biggest and best market in the world?” Other executives around the NHL seemed to have no idea about this. Jim Rutherford of the Carolina Hurricanes said he had not heard anything like this at the meetings he had been at.

It’s tough to watch the Rangers when you live in Ottawa (still working on getting Centre Ice). However, I discovered that Leafs TV online is still offering free online streaming of games, including the broadcast. That’s how I enjoyed watching a tense 1-0 Rangers shootout win against a relentless Toronto Maple Leafs team last night.

The New York Rangers exploded out of the gate and have vaulted to a 5-0 record in the NHL’s regular season. But while they have yet to face a loss on the ice, there was some tragic news for the team yesterday when it was reported that top prospect Alexei Cherepanov had collapsed during a game in the Russian Kontinental Hockey League. He later passed away.

Last season the Blackhawks were relevant and competitive for the first time in a LONG time. Hockey is back in Chicago, baby! Last year was both the rookie campaign AND the breakout year for both Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. The two 1st round pick rookies made good with the big club and definitely rejuvenated the entire franchise on every level. Dustin Byfuglien was the other big new name for the franchise having a breakout year himself. This year will be a proving year for all three to cement their legacies as high caliber NHL talent.

Last season the Minnesota Wild won their first ever Northwest Division title but were ousted in the first round of the playoffs by the Colorado Avalanche. The big question for the Minnesota Wild this season is the whether or not they picked up enough goal scorers to make up for the players they lost in free agency. Here’s a quick rundown off who came and went, along with their scoring numbers from last year.

The reason I’m going to be brief about this particular preview is because what I saw of the Rangers through the preseason, and then what I saw in the back to back 2-1 wins over Tampa in Praha were enough to set my brain into a tailspin… Totally dominated in the games that didn’t matter, and totally dominant in the ones that actually counted for something, albeit played in an ill-contrived attempt at gimmicky marketing masked in the “gesture of good-will to the nations that feed us their best talent” setting…

Various media outlets are stating that there could be a possibility that Marion Gaborik could be moved. The Minnesota Wild are playing the Montreal Canadiens tonight, and guess who is good friends with the Wild’s GM Doug Risebrough?

The Dallas Stars has always had a reputation for being one of the toughest teams on the ice, and they added to that when they signed Sean Avery.
