Islanders Week In Review

I’ll be updating this column weekly, tracking the season of the New York Islanders. The big story thus far has been the inactivity of franchise goalie Rick Dipietro. He finally received his first start of the year against Florida on Saturday night and let in a goal early on. However, he settled down afterwards and played reasonably well, keeping the Islanders in the game.

Wilson Hired, Crawford Fired

Today one coach was hired, that would be Ron Wilson. One coach was fired, that would be Marc Crawford.

Versus NHL playoff anthem

Marketing the NHL in the US isn’t a dream job, but you can’t fault the VERSUS network for not trying. Check out one of their promos they have dubbed the “NHL playoff anthem.” What do you think?

VERSUS has wall-to-wall coverage of the Stanley Cup playoffs

VERSUS, the exclusive cable television home of the NHL, will televise wall-to-wall Stanley Cup Playoffs action starting April 9 with the Conference Quarterfinals as the Ottawa Senators begin their series against the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7 p.m. ET followed by Game 1 of the series between the Calgary Flames and the San Jose Sharks at 10 p.m. ET. VERSUS will kick-off the night with “Hockey Central” at 6:30 p.m. ET. The network will air all of the rounds leading up to and including the first two games of the Stanley Cup Final. Each night during the playoffs, VERSUS will televise one or two playoff games as well as the studio wrap-up show, “Hockey Central.”

Referees To Get A Break?

Since the beginning of the season, the NHL referees have been missing calls left, right, and center, with the post season to start next week, they won’t have to make many calls anyway.

Same As It Ever Was

Now that the hockey regular season is all but over, the guessing of which players that teams not making the post season will want to acquire will once again begin. The NHL is right back where they were before the lock-out.

Visor Tough-Guy

The tough-guy in the NHL is usually called upon to control other players who like to take liberties with their team-mates, however these players should not wear visors on their helmets.

The Famous “Loser” Point

The NHL did something a few years ago, they created a system that makes a team which loses in overtime get a point, I find this to be absurd, but it is making the play-off race exciting.

Why Not Move Free Agency Day?

TSN is reporting that players have rejected the suggestion of moving free agent day from July 1, to July 7, to not interfere with Canada day, or Independence day.

No Touch Icing Should Be Implemented

The NHL has a constant problem, every year and this year is no exception. Up until last week the league put no touch icing on the shelf, it’s funny to see what happens when there is a grave incident that occurs.

Here yesterday, gone today

The 2006-2007 NHL trade deadline had just as many transactions, but few of the superstar names. This year, with over 25 trades made in a day, and a busy month of February, some teams scored big–others, not so much. We look at some of the better deals and how helpful they will be.
