Safe is Life: A Tampa Bay Lightning Season Review

When it comes to sitting down and saying something of real substance about the Tampa Bay Lighting’s new season, I can’t help but be at a loss for words. For those of you who know me, that is something that does not happen very often. What is to say that hasn’t been said before about the team? The Lightning has been up for speculation since the day Oren and Len came onto the scene saying “Hey, we’ll buy you!” Heck, the speculation has been going on for longer than that with our roller coaster seasons and poor ranks. The roller coaster came to a screeching halt when we came in 30th last season. But let’s forget that ever happened for the sake of our hearts. After that, we had more speculation with Dan Boyle’s un-sportsman like trade, and the end of the reign of Jay Feaster and John Tortorella. For a while, the hits just kept on coming to any fan. The shot heard around hockey bay has kept ringing for quite some time. Now it’s October and the storm has ended and it’s finally time to put the finishing touches on a team that has been rebuilt from practically scratch.

Carter, Lightning, Thrashers, Sundin, and Huselius

Are the Flyers risking losing Jeff Carter to an offer sheet by not re-signing him? What would it take for the Lightning to become a better team? Do the Thrashers need a top-pair defenseman? Will Mats Sundin return to the Maple Leafs? Is Kristian Huselius worth the money?

Stuart, Cleary, Gratton, Kolzig, Wild, and Roenick

Where might Brad Stuart play next season? Is Dan Cleary close to re-signing with the Red Wings? Are the Lightning trying to re-sign Chris Gratton? Is Olaf Kolzig on his way out of Washington? What were the Wild willing to part with at the deadline? Will Jeremy Roenick play next season?

Tucker, Lightning, Gionta, Red Wings, Panthers, and Campbell

What’s Darcy Tucker’s value? Will the Lightning keep their marquee players? Are the Devils shopping Brian Gionta? Do the Red Wings have big plans for the trade deadline? Are the Panthers looking to deal? Can the Sabres get a deal done with Brian Campbell?

Hagman, Tanguay, Red Wings, Boyle, Oilers, Bruins, Schultz, Coyotes, Hainsey, and Islanders

Are the Stars talking contract with Niklas Hagman? Do the Flames intended to move Alex Tanguay? Has the Red Wings’ need for a top-six forward increased? Will Lightning re-sign Dan Boyle? Which players are the Oilers trying to unload? Are the Bruins having a tough time adding a scorer? Can Nick Schultz become a deadline casualty? Will Coyotes deal Radim Vrbata out of monetary concerns? Is Ron Hainsey being pursued by teams? Which forwards are the Islanders shopping?

Lightning will try to re-sign Boyle, trade him if they can’t

Tampa Bay Lightning GM Jay Feaster tells Erik Erlendsson of The Tampa Tribune that he will try to open negotiations on a contract extension with pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Dan Boyle before he hits free agency.

Lightning to look for goaltending help

Should Lightning rebuild?

Lightning being scouted by Stars, Blackhawks

Carter Gaddis and Erik Erlendsson of The Tampa Tribune report that Dallas Stars and the Chicago Blackhawks have been scouting the Tampa Bay Lightning recently.

St. Louis for Turco, Forsberg, Marleau, and Hossa

Does the Martin St. Louis for Marty Turco trade rumor make any sense? Will Peter Forsberg play in the NHL ever again? Which Sharks forward are the Maple Leafs after? Are the Thrashers and Marian Hossa close to a deal?

Pratt almost a Sabre?

John Vogl of The Buffalo News reports that the Buffalo Sabres are on the verge of signing unrestricted free agent defenseman Nolan Pratt.

Lightning awaiting sale confirmation to negotiate with Boyle

Carter Gaddis of The Tampa Tribune reports that Tampa Bay Lightning GM Jay Feaster’s top priority is to sign impending unrestricted free agent defenseman Dan Boyle to a contract extension.

Lightning, Numminen, Maple Leafs, and Esche

Would the Lightning trade Dan Boyle? Will heart problems force Teppo Numminen to retire? Is the Maple Leafs GM more concerned about saving his job than the future of his team? What’s up with Robert Esche?

Johnson and the Oilers, Lecavalier, Denis, and Forsberg

Do the Oilers have any interest in UFA Mike Johnson? Are the Lightning planning on signing Vincent Lecavalier before he reaches free agency? Could Marc Denis find his way out of Tampa Bay? Who’s leading the way in the Peter Forsberg sweepstakes?

Lightning won’t tinker with goaltending situation

New Tampa Bay Lightning owner Doug MacLean tells Erik Erlendsson of The Tampa Tribune that he is not worried about going with the same goaltending tandem as last season.
