I’ll be updating this column weekly, tracking the season of the New York Islanders. The big story thus far has been the inactivity of franchise goalie Rick Dipietro. He finally received his first start of the year against Florida on Saturday night and let in a goal early on. However, he settled down afterwards and played reasonably well, keeping the Islanders in the game.
The New York Islanders open up the season with an intriguing blend of veteran players and youthful exuberance. How all these pieces blend together (and whether or not any one of them can achieve 25 goals) is anyone’s guess right now.

What a beginning to Kyle Okposo’s career. The highly touted prospect of the New York Islanders scored his first NHL goal last night (the Game Winning goal, no less) and contributed an assist in the Islanders’ 3-1 win over the New Jersey Devils last night at the Prudential Center. The win broke New York’s losing streak at 6 games. Blake Comeau and Trent Hunter (empty netter) also contributed goals for the Islanders. Travis Zajac tallied for the Devils.
It’s been a long time since hockey has been relevant in New York… but don’t tell that to Islanders and Rangers fans. Every time these two step on the ice against one another, fans of each team treat the contest as if it were Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Newsday’s Greg Logan suggests that New York Islanders pending free agent forward Trent Hunter could become trade bait if the club decides to become sellers before the February 26 trade deadline.
