Flames Acquire Vandermeer for 3rd rounder

The Calgary Flames topped off the three day GM Meetings by swinging a minor trade with the Philadelphia Flyers. Coming to Calgary is versatile defenceman Jim Vandermeer, with a 2009 third round pick heading back to Philly.

Vandermeer adds depth to the Flames’ back-end, and can play in a variety of situations, including the power-play. He currently has 3 goals and 18 points on the season.

The reality is that we’ll likely see a lot of these kinds of moves as we near the deadline. Teams are looking for cost-effective depth players to make a push at a deep playoff run. Many of these players who are moved will be second or third tier guys who are not under contract beyond this season. They’re not really rentals, more like mercenaries.

I think this move also gives the Flyers something in return for Vandermeer, who they may not have re-signed in the offseason anyway. It also frees up a little more cap space for some deadline dealing. Vandermeer is making $1.1M for this season.

A new author at RMT, I've had previous experience at TheFourthPeriod.com and am currently the owner of Sportsfiend.ca, which is a multi-sports site.

I have been a hockey fan my entire life. I remember watching as a child as my father would tune in to any games with Czechoslovakia versus the Soviet (my family is Czech). It was those early childhood memories that engraved my love for hockey into the fabric of my person.

One thing I have learned is that hockey is a sport best enjoyed for its players, not its teams. Steve Yzerman is a rare commodity, meaning that rooting for a particular team may mean losing touch with your idols.

While Jagr is the player I admire most from a skill standpoint, I think Yzerman is the epitomy of professional sports, because of his genuine nature, his passion for the game, and his gentlemanly approach to what can be quite a soap-opera at times.
